Since Wednesday, we've had KDE 4.1.3 in the macports ports system. This means that if you do something like port install amarok or port install ktorrent (yes those two are actually available) they will automagically be installed for you, with all the dependencies taken care of.
November 2008
Being only one post away from breaking my "most posts in a month record" and somewhat making up for the dearth is posting last month, I present to you "Taming the Tiger!". Er, Leopard that is.
This January, God willing and KDE E.V. paying, I'll be in Jamaica for the 1st (hopefully) annual Camp KDE conference. Camp KDE spun out of the KDE 4.0 release event which took place in Mountain View, Cali at Google's place. Legend has it the organizers of the event realized that there were a lot of people who weren't going to the akademies in Europe because they a) couldn't afford it b) had other engangements at that time. I can relate to both points as I was always either in school whenever they had akademy (scheduled too close to end of semester/exam season) or couldn't afford to go.
Nepomuk actually does work on os x, it just doesn't start automatically. I better file a bug to get this started automatically. Had to run /Applications/KDE4/nepomukservicestub.app/Contents/MacOS/nepomukservicestub nepomukstorage myself. It was also nice enough to segfault after I launched dolphin so I could get my pics. I'd post them but I'm lazy.
The internet is cool. Thanks Daniel.
To bundle or not to bundle. My everlovin' question.
Amarok 2 RC1 will be released soon and we here on the mac team have been working at near break neck speed to bring our users the best possible all around experience. This starts from the moment the installer is downloaded, to the second the play button is press, to the instant the menus are navigated. We tried to get a lot of things right. We've largely failed, but as I've said before that's KDE's fault :-) There's a lot to be said that this works at all however, so kudos to all involved.
For your clicking pleasure: Amarok 2 Beta
* Compile a universal mysql package with the embedded library included. This fails in the examples directory on OS X.
* Generate separate ppc and intel packages for mysql and Amarok 2 if since the above doesn't work out. This way we get a working collection for the A2 binary release. [check!]
* Add the KDE4 portfiles to the macports repo, along with portfiles for those dependencies available on OS X. [check!]
* Finish the horrible excuse for a packaging tutorial currently on techbase.

So I'm cruisin' the planet looking for Alex's generous offer after NightRose pointed me to it, and my rss aggregator just happens to be on a post with some pretty pictures. I'm a sucker for pictures. They get me right there. Everytime. I won't comment on the UI in the pictures 'cause then I'd have to say something mean, and I'm doing so well today.
Just realized that I can go directly to a folder in the Finder by typing [Command]+[Shift]+G. This makes my file browsing experience complete. Now I can open hidden folders without needing to use open /path/to/hidden/.directory in Terminal.app.
Thanks to the Daring Fireball feed which took me to this little gem.
Allow me to start off by stating that there is no such thing. The standalone package is a myth which we (or at least I) aspire to here in KDE/Mac land. Installation of KDE software is wholly geared towards non-proprietary *nix platforms. Whilst the I'm a PC
crowd might be willing to overlook the inconvenience of installing 1 GB of tangentially related packages to get that one program they desire, members of the Cult-of-Mac are far less forgiving. This leaves us, i.e.
Oh yes. He did. I hear it's typical at these little shindigs to give a short intro, do a little song and dance, and then wink at the ladies and watch them swoon. My name is Orville Bennett, and I'm a PC.
No, not really. I'm actually the guy doing Mac packages until RangerRick returns to take his rightful place atop the disk imaging throne pleasecomebackPLEASE.
So that's what this is all about. I could talk about the presidential election and all of that but everything I would have wanted to say has already left my mind. I'm just glad it's all over and Palin didn't win.
This also doubles as a test for the feed I'll link to the planet. Whenever I want to sydnicate
I'll just make a blog post. Otherwise - Story, etc. ;-)
